    Media Release

    October 07, 2011

September 9, 2011 Simcoe and District Humane Society received a call from a lady who was driving on Blue Line Road just south of Highway #3. She was standing by a cat who had been hit by a car. He was covered in blood and was very injured. She was not going to leave the cat and would wait until someone could help.

Arrangements were made for her to drop the cat off at a local veterinary clinic. Bloody and broken, the staff at the clinic went to work, noticing swelling around the head and feeling what was thought to be bone chips from the trauma. Veterinary staff did what they could to keep the kitty comfortable, while monitoring vitals and the swelling caused by the trauma.

This amazing short-haired, orange and white male cat struggled for life, yet responded to the treatment given and the love shown to him by his new caregivers. Medication to ward of infection and to help with pain along with this young cat’s will to live proved to be helpful as each day showed a greater promise of survival.

He is now known as Sunny by staff of both the veterinary hospital and the SDHS because of his “Sunny” personality. He certainly brightened up everyone’s day as they watched him get stronger and his body mend.

It was later when the swelling around the head and neck had subsided that veterinary staff felt more of the “pieces” throughout the head and body. Xrays were taken which proved these were not bone chips from a car accident as it was first thought but multiple pellets (buckshot) from someone who shot him from the front.

35 buckshot pellets riddle his head and upper body, 24 in the head area alone.

Those pellets that hit the eye have caused permanent blindness, yet this boy is ready to love and be loved. Care will be given by volunteers and a special SDHS fosterer until a permanent “forever home” can be found for Sunny. He has adjusted very well to his plight and is very willing to learn where all his necessities can be found. He is able to sense his litter box, his food and his water and really enjoys finding any hand to give his ears a scratch and his belly a rub.

To show his appreciation to his newly found T.L.C., a little drool never hurt anyone as he purrs his way into everyone’s heart!

On August 11, 2011 approximately 6:30pm two young ladies brought a 2-3 week old kitten to the SDHS trailer begging for help. The kitten had been thrown from a vehicle and was found on the side of Concession 10 Townsend .

A dislocated jaw and a very torn lip were only two of the injuries found on the little kitten.

Starving, the kitten found the warmth from her surrogate mom and her hot water bottle comforting, welcoming and just what the doctor ordered as treatment was started to save the young kitten’s life.

“Droppedin” is a medium hair brown tabby whose petite size and sweet constant smile due to the injury to the lip makes everyone she meets fall in love with her.

She has survived her ordeal with the help of SDHS volunteers and her injuries have not deterred her from being a very active normal kitten. This little one is also ready for adoption into a home she can call her own.

Many animals come into the care of the Society just like Sunny and Droppedin; sick, injured and distressed. The Society relies strictly on volunteers and from the donations of people in the community and fundraising efforts. Every dollar goes towards animal care, from pick up to adoption.

If you would like to help by donating please contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Donations can be made online at www.s-dhs.ca or at the office 24 Grigg Drive during business hours by cash, cheque, visa, mastercard, or debit.

Your donation of unscented, non-clumping litter, Performatrin kitten food (canned and dry) and Royal Canin or Performatrin cat food would be greatly appreciated as volunteers and fosterers feed and house over 140 cats and kittens until adoption.

Please note that shelter volunteers are very busy working with the animals. With very few office volunteers available it is difficult to answer phones at this time. Please drop by the shelter or email info@ s-dhs.ca . We understand your frustration not being able to reach us by phone and ask for your understanding as we search for regular office volunteers. If you would like to volunteer please visit www.s-dhs.ca to download a copy of the SDHS volunteer application.

Your continued support helps us continue to help those who cannot help themselves!
