    We are taking applications for the following volunteers positions.

    Shelter and Animal Care

    Volunteers work hands on with the animals in care

    Animal Care Coordinator (start date January 1, 2011) 

    This is a full-time position and will require a driver's licence and the person's ability to perform emergency tasks

    Duties Include: 

    1. Overseeing kennel staff and schedules
    2. cleaning kennels
    3. assessing and reporting animal's well-being
    4. following veterinary direction for care 
    5. reporting animal's daily health and care
    6. recording and updating animal care records
    7. socializing animals
    8. preparing animals for spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations and adoption
    9. scheduling volunteers for shelter care responsibilities 

      

    Kennel Staff (immediate start date) 

    Kennel staff report directly to Animal Care Coordinator and perform duties as required

    Duties Include: 

    1. cleaning kennels, dishes and other animal care items 
    2. following direction for care 
    3. recording animal's daily health and care
    4. socializing animals 

     

    • Morning Kennel Staff 7:30am - noon
    • Evening Kennel Staff 7pm-9pm (approximately - depends on how many animals are in care)
    • Weekend Kennel Staff mornings 7:30am – 12noon and evenings 7pm – 9pm (approximately - depends on how many animals are in care)
    • Kennel Staff - On Call

    Adoptions Coordinator (start date January 1, 2011) 

    This position will require a driver's license and vehicle and will require transportation to Adoption Facilities and Events. 

    Must have good knowledge of computers and great people skills.

    Duties Include: 

    1. answering calls and emails from potential adopters
    2. preparing adoption records and packages 
    3. preparing adoption facilities and stores for animals
    4. following guidelines for adoptions 
    5. training and scheduling volunteers for adoption events
    6. recording adoptions and filing records
    7. maintaining the adoption facilities appropriately
    8. post-adoption follow-ups and care 

      

    Adoptions Volunteers (immediate start date) 

    This position may require a driver's license and vehicle.

    Duties Include: 

    1. following guidelines for adoptions
    2. Interviewing potential adopters and placing animals in their new homes 
    3. Filing Adoption Records
    4. cleaning kennels and socializing with animals.
    • Adoptions volunteers (1-3 positions) on Saturdays 11:00am – 3pm
    • Adoption volunteers (5-10 positions) at PetSmart Stores in Burlington and Stoney Creek Friday pm, Saturdays and Sundays

    Other Shelter Care Positions (immediate start date) 

    These positions require reliable and dedicated volunteers.

    • Foster home supplies and supply trailer Saturday 9am – 11:30am
    • Coop Placements (both morning and afternoon)

    Office volunteers (immediate start date) 

    Volunteers who work in the office must be responsible, reliable and must be able to multi-task in a more confined area.

    Computer knowledge and ability to use MS office programs a must. (not internet related)

    Daily Office staff Monday - Saturday 11am-3pm

    Should have good computer skills (not internet) and ability to work well with people and in busy situations

    Duties Include: 

    1. answering phones and greeting the public 
    2. keeping call logs
    3. directing calls to appropriate volunteers
    4. assisting with animal intakes and adoptions
    5. working with clients and professional organizations
    6. printing of SDHS informational material and event posters
    7. filing documents and important papers

    Weekly laundry 2-4 hours/week

    Duties include:

    1. picking up laundry from shelter and doing laundry at laundromat
    2. laundry must be dried, folded and sorted on shelves

     

    Property maintenance Volunteers (hours vary) 

     Duties may include:

    1. grass cutting and trimming, snow removal, general cleanup
    2. cleaning of offices and supply trailer

     

    More Position Available

     

    Position: Volunteer with Accounting Experience.

    Experience: Excellent computer skills, experience in data management, Office programs, QuickBooks or other accounting programs.

    Time Commitment: 3-10 hours per week in office.

    Term: 2 year volunteer commitment.

     

    Position: Laundry Volunteer

    Experience: None

    Time Commitment: 3-5 hours per week in local laundromat

    Term: Weekly commitment

    SDHS will pay for laundry soap, dryer sheets, bleach and washer/dryer use at laundromat

     

    Position: Foster Care Program Volunteer.

    Experience: Good communication skills, problem solving abilities, experience in data management, Office programs, digital photography and editing is essential.

    Time Commitment: 3/5 hours per week in office.

    Term: 1 year volunteer commitment.

     

    Position: Volunteer Drivers for pickup/deliver supplies, drive volunteers to events, deliver animals in emergency and other animal related events.

    Experience: Clean driving record, access to a reliable vehicle

    Time Commitment: Varies.

    Term: As long as you are able to.

     

    Position: SWAP (Seniors With Animals and Pets Program) Coordinator.

    Experience: Good communication skills, ability to work with people of all ages, good organization skills.

    Time Commitment: 2 hours per week in office, 4 hours per week in the community.

    Term: 1 year volunteer commitment.

     

    Position: Simcoe and District Humane Society Member.

    Experience: Wanting to help our four legged friends that can not help themselves.

    Time Commitment: Hours are flexible to meet your needs

    Term: 1 year volunteer commitment.

     

    Position: Volunteers needed to organize and work at fundraising and other special events

    Experience: Good organizational and people skills

    Time Commitment: This depends on the type of activity and the number of volunteers able to assist

    Term: Continues with additional events as planned

     

    PetSmart Adoptions Volunteers

    Once again, we will be adopting our pets out at PetSmart both Brant Street and Plains Road locations throughout the year.  We will need volunteers for Friday evenings, Saturdays and Sundays during the months. Please join the list of volunteers who help find our pets their "forever homes".
